The Apostolate for Persons with Disabilities serves to promote the full inclusion and participation of individuals with disabilities and mental health challenges in every aspect of the Church’s life. Every baptized person — regardless of ability — is called to holiness and mission as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Our goal is to help ensure that all people are welcomed, supported, and empowered to live out that calling in their parishes, schools, and communities.
The Apostolate offers spiritual, social, and pastoral resources to individuals, families, and parish leaders. This includes televised Sunday Masses, adapted catechetical materials, mental health resources, retreats, sacramental support, parish trainings, and opportunities for community connection and healing—such as our suicide loss support group and annual Masses honoring St. Dymphna and St. Margaret of Castello.
St. James Parish in Madison served as the first home of the Apostolate. Father Campion served as Associate Pastor at St. James, as well as serving as Diocesan Director of the Catholic Youth Organization (C.Y.O.) and Chaplain of Madison General Hospital.
Thanks to the zeal of Father Campion, “Little Christmas with the Bishop” took place at Holy Name Seminary in Madison on January 6, 1968. This event developed into an annual Advent/Christmas Party and Mass that was held at Monroe High School for many years. Most recently, this event and Mass has moved to Christ the King Parish's St. Victor location. The efforts and generosity of the Monroe community make this a very special event for many each year.
In 2013, Msgr. Bakke developed a program to provide financial grants to parishes, schools and agencies in the Diocese of Madison to help ensure that persons with disabilities are fully included in the life of the Church. Grants have been used to make buildings and programs across the diocese more accessible to persons with disabilities.
After an extensive look at the needs of our diocese, the Apostolate also hired Laura Sokup in a new position, Mental Health Program Coordinator. Laura provides mental health resources, such as a Catholic Mental Health Professionals Referral Network, and support to parish mental health ministries.
