On Friday, June 12, the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Bishop Hying will consecrate the Diocese of Madison to the Sacred Heart of Jesus at a special diocesan-wide Mass. As part of the celebration of both the consecration and the country’s 250th anniversary, a variety of other materials and activities will be offered throughout the diocese.
Margaret Alacoque was born in 1647 in France, the only daughter of Claude and Philiberte Lamyn Alacoque.
Margaret always showed an intense love for the Blessed Sacrament and preferred silence over typical childhood play.
She began practicing severe corporal mortification after her First Communion at age nine.
On December 27, 1673, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque was praying alone in the chapel of her convent when the Sacred Heart appeared to her.
Jesus’ body was filled with light, and His Heart was on fire, bleeding and crowned with thorns.
Our Lord said to her, “Behold this Heart which has loved men so much! My Divine Heart is so inflamed with love for mankind . . . that it can no longer contain within itself the flames of its burning charity and must spread them abroad by your means.”
Bishop Donald J. Hying of Madison is inviting everyone to a special celebration on Friday, June 12.
The bishop will consecrate the Diocese of Madison to the Sacred Heart of Jesus during a 7 p.m. Mass at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, part of Epiphany of the Lord Parish, 221 Columbus St., Sun Prairie.
MostSacred Heart of Jesus, blazing furnace of God’s mercy and goodness, transform my heart and spirit so that I might give myself more generously in love and service to others. May Your tender Heart always be the place of encounter to experience the unconditional love of God tangibly made manifest in Your every word, action and gesture.
Take possession of me so that I might be an extension of Your presence in our world and channel the rivers of living water that flow from the fountain of Your infinite love and mercy. Grant me the grace needed to boldly proclaim and zealously spread the Gospel through the joyful work of evangelization, as I invite others to enter more deeply into the mystery of Your Most Sacred Heart! Amen.

The Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a development of the traditional Sacred Heart devotion which began in the Middle Ages and culminated in the revelations of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French Visitation nun in the seventeenth century. He revealed to her the ways in which He desires men and women to adore His Sacred Heart. He also gave her certain promises which would be granted to those who faithfully adored His Sacred Heart.
The Enthronement of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is an act of intentional discipleship through the dedication of a person and a family to the Divine Heart of Our Lord. It is an invitation to consciously commit to be missionary disciples and strive to live in union with Christ by obeying His Commandments of love.
Having an image or statue enshrined within our homes serves as a reminder that we are called to love one another and to be witnesses to that merciful love to all who visit us.
The Act of Reparation to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is a beautiful devotion that asks for atonement and forgiveness for offenses against the Sacred Heart, both offenses committed personally and those committed by the world. A partial indulgence is granted the Christian faithful who devoutly recite the act of reparation. This indulgence will be a plenary one when this Act of Reparation is publicly recited on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (See Handbook of Indulgences: Norms and Grants, pages 54-55).
To obtain a plenary indulgence for this act, the faithful must also go to Confession (within 20 days before or after the act), receive Holy Communion on the day of the act, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father on the day of the act (often done by praying an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be).
