Food Pantries
The Catholic Charities Parish Mobile Food Pantry program helps residents in rural areas stretch their grocery budgets a bit more by providing produce, meat, and other necessities each month at parishes throughout the Diocese of Madison in partnership with the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin. Mobile food pantries are available once a month in Fort Atkinson, Monroe, Patch Grove, Portage, Platteville, Boscobel, Highland, Reedsburg, Janesville, and Pardeeville. The Beacon
The Beacon, located at 615 E Washington Ave in Madison, offers safe shelter for individuals and families experiencing homelessness every day from 8 am to 5 pm. The Beacon provides access to basic needs – including breakfast and lunch, private showers, laundry and mail service, storage, and computers – as well as connections to more than two dozen partner agencies under one roof offering assistance in locating permanent housing, healthcare, and more. 5 Door Recovery
5 Door Recovery is a residential treatment program for adults living with substance use disorder. Many clients also have co-occurring disorders and a history of trauma. Our goal is to help them move into recovery while also addressing their mental health and trauma issues. Learn more at 5doorrecovery.org.
Building Bridges
Building Bridges is a school-based mental health program that serves students in grades 4K-8, with immediate mental health needs, and their families. Building Bridges serves school districts in Madison, Verona, Sun Prairie, DeForest, Middleton-Cross Plains, Waunakee, Oregon, Stoughton, Mount Horeb, and Monona Grove. Please reach out to your child’s school social worker if you’re interested in learning more about a referral to Building Bridges.

In southcentral Wisconsin, dozens of Society of St. Vincent de Paul Conferences operate thrift stores, food pantries, and other programs to help neighbors facing financial hardships. All conferences also offer person-to-person help, guidance and friendship through volunteer-run home visits. Contact your local Society of St. Vincent de Paul to see what help is available. The Catholic Multicultural Center (CMC) in Madison is dedicated to helping our brothers and sisters in need by serving the whole person with dignity and respect. We accomplish this mission by meeting immediate needs, providing educational services, and offering spiritual and cultural activities. The CMC provides a food pantry, free meals, personal essentials, immigration legal services, job search and training assistance, youth activities and more.

Project Rachel is an outreach ministry of the Catholic Church offering care and compassion for women and men healing from abortion. Within the Diocese of Madison, there is a network of healing by specially trained caregivers who can offer direct individual help or assist with specific healing programs such as Rachel’s Vineyard retreat weekends, support groups, and After Care retreats. Contact Mary Mead, the Rachel’s Vineyard & Project Rachel Coordinator, who will listen to your story and can help you find the appropriate persons and resources to walk with you in your journey to healing.

Walking with Moms in Need is an initiative of Catholics across the United States, joined in by individuals at the local level, including many in southwestern Wisconsin. In the Diocese of Madison, it is a program of Catholic Charities. We invite all people to join us in accompanying moms (and dads too!) and their families and to offer support.

We will connect you to a local group assisting with Walking with Moms. Parishes have been asked to appoint a leader to spearhead each community’s efforts and recruit volunteers.
How does my parish get started?
Your parish is already doing amazing things to help moms in need. Click here to see if your parish has already been trained and filled out the survey. If not, please complete the following steps:
- Watch this video. It covers what Walking with Moms in Need is, what it isn’t, how to fill out our survey, and how we’ll use the information your parish shares with us.
- Let us know if you’ve watched the training video. Email the volunteer team at [email protected] to let us know a member of your parish has finished the training video and we’ll let you know next steps.

- Ask. Ask her what she most needs and desires for herself and her family. Make sure that she is comfortable with any assistance.
- Nourish. Drop off a home-cooked meal, offer to pick up groceries, or arrange a meal train.
- Research. Help her locate necessary resources and offer to make calls on her behalf. Reach out to your community to see if there is anyone who may be willing to offer services at a reduced cost.
- Commit. Be consistent in showing up for her and walking alongside her for as long as she wishes.
