Advent Midwife ChallengeDiocese of MadisonIn the midst of the busyness of Christmas preparations that often dominate Advent, Bishop Hying invites us to remember those in need this season by making a concrete commitment to our Advent Midwife Challenge, which will fund the salaries of two midwives in the Diocese of Jacmel, Haiti.
In 2023, the Diocese of Madison committed to assisting our sister diocese in Jacmel by collecting the funds needed to hire a midwife to assist with pregnancy and birth at the Centre de Santé Sacré-Coeur de Thiotte (The Sacred Heart of Thiotte Healthcare Center or CSST). Since medical services are limited, towns in Haiti often rely on midwives to care for expectant mothers and to help deliver babies, which allows existing clinics and healthcare facilities to focus their resources on other needs in their community.

Because of the generosity of the faithful and a matching grant, CSST was able to hire two midwives to care for expectant women, newborns, and infants. In 2024, these midwives provided care for over 1,150 pregnant women and delivered over 150 babies. And in 2025, they assisted nearly 1500 expectant mothers and their newborns.The faithful of the Diocese of Madison are invited once again to contribute to this year's Advent Midwife Challenge so that the CSST can retain their two midwives for the next year. The overall goal is $25,000.
